“A happy heart is good medicine and a joyful mind causes healing,
but a broken spirit dries up the bones.”
Proverbs 17:22
Today is World Meditation Day. Have you ever tried meditating, or just being mindful? I hope you have, because meditation is a beautiful gift. I’d like to share with you some personal insights from my own journey.
I’ve been practicing meditation since 2018. I learned about it through my husband, who has been practicing it for a couple of years. Back then, I wasn’t interested in meditation. The first time I tried it was when I was admitted to the hospital for hypertension.
I immersed myself in meditation when I had a Transient ischemic attack (mini stroke). This was during the time when I found out about my numerous health issues (from hypertension to brain fog and numbness in my fingers). In those days, I was anxious for myself and for many other things. But meditation, which is essentially being mindful of our thoughts and observing our feelings without judgment, connecting ourselves to God, to love, and to a Higher place of goodness, helped me greatly in overcoming my fears and anxiety.
My connection with God deepened – I began to meditate every morning and before bedtime. I committed time to meditate. Through it, my brain fog faded away and my memory improved. I found a different kind of relaxation with meditation, the kind of calm that isn’t so easily shaken by stress. It also sped up my recovery after surgery. It helped me heal from cancer. I was able to deeply connect with my Higher Self.
There are a lot of meditation guides on YouTube, and different mindfulness apps to help you jumpstart your lifelong journey with meditation. I used “Spiritual Reality” for a year before I shifted to Dr. Joe Dispenza’s “You are the Placebo,” introduced to me by my husband. Every time I play this meditation guide, I always cry – God’s presence runs so deep, and His love is so vast, so grandly felt every time I meditate. And I can say that through this, God healed me from cancer. It sounds odd: how can meditation HEAL you?
I believe that healing happens the moment you release the fear of having the dis-ease and open yourself up to the healing power and love of God, through surrendering and letting go and being grateful for your healing - the joy of having received healing at that very moment. Through that, energy is released into the universe, and in the right time, it will become your reality.
The hardest part was when I was about to undergo Thryoid Cancer Treatment. I had to stop taking thyroid hormone meds for more than a month as preparation for Radioactive Iodine therapy, and I struggled deeply, fighting through muscle weakness, an irregular heartbeat, fluctuation of my blood pressure and muscle pain. I thought I was dying. I decided not to push through with RAI and was placed back on thyroid medication.
With God’s grace, just after a couple of days, I regained my strength and started to feel better. I didn’t know then that it was the beginning of my healing. November 20th, while meditating I heard a message: "You are already healed". Every day, during my meditation, I asked Him to heal me, and He always responded, “You are already healed.” Praise God!
Just a week ago, I asked Him again while meditating. He said, "My daughter, you are already completely healed and cancer free since November. Haven't you noticed you don't have any symptoms at all?" I cried so hard that night. I felt His great love and the assurance of my healing. He always tells me that I am healed every time I meditate, but on that night, He specifically mentioned “since November,” pointing back to the first time He gave me His message of healing.
I may not have any medical lab results from a doctor confirming that I'm cancer-free. But how can I even doubt God’s assurance? He is my Healer and the all-knowing God! The symptoms, discomfort and pain I felt has gone away, for the past couple of months now. I feel absolutely great. I am healed!
Lord God, I praise You and thank You! All of this has only been possible because of God -- because of His love, of His grace, of His mercy, of His great power. All of this is for His glory.
My heart abounds in Your generosity, my spirit filled with gladness and gratitude, my praises and thanksgiving pressed down, shaken together and running over, for You, my Lord, my God. I sing of Your love - the greatest of these. Thank You, so so much!
Meditation has been a huge part of my healing journey – one of God’s instruments, along with doctors, medicine and the daily practice of living in His love and of my loved ones. To meditate is, essentially, to spend time with God, to be still in His presence, and to hear Him speak to us. Prayer is us talking to God, meditation is God talking to us. The creation connecting to the Creator.
I suggest starting with simple mindfulness meditations, which can be found in apps such as Headspace and Calm. A simple “mindfulness meditation for beginners” search on YouTube brings up thousands of helpful guides for you to get started. If you want a Christian version, try encounteringpeace.org. Setting aside time to be still, and being consistent in practicing meditation every day are the hardest parts – but nothing can compare to the joy that comes with connecting to God in the midst of our daily lives. In our prayer and meditation, we get to anchor our hearts, minds, and souls in God’s great presence. It is such a gift.
Friend, I hope you begin your own meditation journey. Growing deeper in faith doesn’t happen in one sitting. You may not always feel like something’s happening, but I assure you, God’s working in you and through you. Time with God is never wasted time.
Love and Light,
Alpha
